L.I. reflect and respond to texts

One of the Learning Intentions in our reading programme is to Reflect and respond to text.
We have been practicing in class by looking at newspaper articles and reading novels and writing a response to what we read.

Read the article below and write a response to it in the comments box.

Remember to include these things in your response:
  • express your thoughts and opinions
  • link it to your own experiences or prior knowledge
  • ask questions or make predictions

Seatbelt shirt aims to fool police

Last updated 09:56 03/04/2013

Motorist wears a seatbelt t-shirt.
UNBELIEVABLE: Chinese motorist wears a seatbelt t-shirt.

This year's most stupid accessory award goes to: the seatbelt shirt from China which has a diagonal black stripe across it that makes it look as though you are wearing your seatbelt when you're daft enough not to.

The shirts cost between NZ$6.70 and NZ$9.60.
Frankly we wouldn't been seen dead in one, which is exactly what could happen if you wear one instead of the belt it's supposed to resemble.

CarNewsChina.com reports police were cracking down on the wearing of safety belts following a number of high profile accidents where occupants were killed after they were launched through car windows.

The report gave no indication of big a problem the non-wearing of seatbelts is, but added drivers were hoping the shirts would fool a busy policeman when he looks quickly inside.
Police said that while not wearing a safety belt was breaking the law, wearing the shirt was not.

The penalty for not wearing a safety belt is 50 yuan (NZ$9.50) and a deduction of two points, out of 12, of the driver’s licence.

HOMEWORK TASKS wk6

Task 1 - Chess Advice

Leave a comment below with some advice on how white can win this game!! OR you could leave a comment to help TamaTu and Kade win.

Can you name the pieces that are still on the board?
What is your favourite piece? and why?

Task 2 - Te Reo Maori

You are currently creating Koru Art, with each koru representing a member of your whanau (family).
Your task is to find out the Maori word for one of the members of your family (i.e. whaea - mother), and comment underneath the Koru Art post.

Chess Practice

A few weeks ago, students were asked to learn how to play a game of chess as part of their homework.

Research suggests that Chess develops intellectual, sporting, decision making, concentration, and perseverance skills. Not only is it mentally challenging, but it attracts not only gifted pupils but students at all levels of learning. Many students who have been experiencing problems, particularly in mathematics and reading, sometimes demonstrate remarkable progress after learning and playing chess.

Over the past week, they have had the opportunity to put their knowledge to practice in preparation for our Room10 Chess Tournament.

Toku Whanau - Koru Art

Our latest new art project in the classroom links to Te Reo Maori and what they will be learning next - how to say their whakapapa (family tree) in Maori.

All our pieces of art will fit together and frame the front of the classroom.  The Koru art they are creating represents their whanau (family) / the people (and in some cases pets) most important to them.

Below are some images of the planning stages, Logan's favourite attempt at a Koru, and some nearly finished products.

Guidelines/Consequences

We brainstormed guidelines that our class will follow to ensure we have an effective learning environment.  They fall under these headings: Be Respectful (of ourselves and to others), Be Responsible (for our learning and our actions), Be Safe (physically and emotionally).

We also discussed consequences for the behaviour that is not acceptable within the classroom (e.g. being too noisy that it disrupts concentration and learning).  As a class we agreed that instead of writing lines (and killing trees) or picking up rubbish (that should already be in bins anyway) or staying in at lunchtime (when we need that time outside), physical consequences (such as burpees, shuttles, pressups, planks, wall sits etc.) would be better because even though it's a consequence, we still benefit from it.
