CARNIVAL

On Friday the 22nd of March we had our first School Carnival. It was a day full of delicious food, fun activities, and very busy students. It was an excellent learning experience for students, they had to plan and execute their business proposal. Here are some photos of the day:

Task 1 - Chess Advice

Task 2 - Te Reo Maori

You are currently creating Koru Art, with each koru representing a member of your whanau (family).
Your task is to find out the Maori word for one of the members of your family (i.e. whaea - mother), and comment underneath the Koru Art post.

Chess Practice

A few weeks ago, students were asked to learn how to play a game of chess as part of their homework.

Research suggests that Chess develops intellectual, sporting, decision making, concentration, and perseverance skills. Not only is it mentally challenging, but it attracts not only gifted pupils but students at all levels of learning. Many students who have been experiencing problems, particularly in mathematics and reading, sometimes demonstrate remarkable progress after learning and playing chess.

Over the past week, they have had the opportunity to put their knowledge to practice in preparation for our Room10 Chess Tournament. 

 

 

  

Toku Whanau - Koru Art

Our latest new art project in the classroom links to Te Reo Maori and what they will be learning next - how to say their whakapapa (family tree) in Maori.

All our pieces of art will fit together and frame the front of the classroom.  The Koru art they are creating represents their whanau (family) / the people (and in some cases pets) most important to them.

Carnival Prep.

Today was all about the business plan. Students have decided on what their business venture will be for the School Carnival in Week7, and are now deciding on their Business Name, Roles and Responsibilities within the team, Resources needed and Marketing plans.

Guidelines/Consequences


We brainstormed guidelines that our class will follow to ensure we have an effective learning environment.  They fall under these headings: Be Respectful (of ourselves and to others), Be Responsible (for our learning and our actions), Be Safe (physically and emotionally).








We also discussed consequences for the behaviour that is not acceptable within the classroom (e.g. being too noisy that it disrupts concentration and learning).  As a class we agreed that instead of writing lines (and killing trees) or picking up rubbish (that should already be in bins anyway) or staying in at lunchtime (when we need that time outside), physical consequences (such as burpees, shuttles, pressups, planks, wall sits etc.) would be better because even though it's a consequence, we still benefit from it.
